What is Industry 4.0, and how will it affect the future of teaching?

Industry 4.0 is the fourth industrial revolution, and it is happening now!

The first industrial revolution emerged in the 18^th Century, and saw the rise of factory production, which included mechanisation, steam power and water power.

This was followed by the second industrial revolution in the 19^th Century, which revolved around mass production and assembly lines using electricity.

In the 20^th Century, the third industrial revolution came with electronics, I.T. systems and automation.

Now in the 21^st Century, we are part of the emerging fourth industrial revolution, which is powered by digital transformation. This will allow for automated and autonomous manufacturing with connected systems that can cooperate with each other.

Furthermore, Industry 4.0 improves and develops on digital technology from recent decades with the help of interconnectivity through the Internet of Things (IoT), access to real-time data, and the introduction of cyber-physical systems, such as smart grids and industrial control systems.

By 2025, Industry 4.0 is expected to generate close to $1 trillion in economic value according to Tom Kelly, the CEO if Automation Alley, Michigan, USA's Industry 4.0 knowledge centre.

Industry 4.0 will inevitably lead to the emergence and necessity of Education 4.0.

This new experience-based education system uses digital technologies instead of rote-based learning. It trains new generations to meet the needs of Industry 4.0, by bringing together technology, innovation, creativity, and discovery-based learning.

Put simply, it prepares students for jobs that don’t even exist yet!
